The idea that one must be able to repeat the other's statement, and do so accurately, was part and parcel of debates in the great Catholic universities of the Scholastic era. Imagine if that were a criterion for public debates nowadays.

Yeah, good listening is so incredibly valuable you would have to simply call it priceless. I employed it to great effect to keep a doomed and ultimately nearly worthless relationship more-or-less healthy for about four years. Youre probably wondering how the hell that works, well, I was fooling myself, I was understanding what my fiancee' was saying and convincing myself I was ok with it, meanwhile she was perfectly happy because I was listening and understanding.

I fully intend to use this skill again in the future in altogether more fruitful relationships.
